The Artist and their environment

The Artist and their environment

Artists have long been influenced by their surroundings.

California artist’s paint mostly California scenes and so on. But that is just the surface layer in what makes us who we are. For me, family is first , and if all is well on the home front, all will be well in the studio. Working out of my house all those years as an illustrator kept me in close contact with my family, so I knew most of the time what my kids were up to and put out the daily fires that spring up when you are working out of your home. I love to cook so at the end of a hopefully good day in the studio, I’ll pour a drink and start prepping dinner. The process of switching from a brush to a spatula is relaxing and is great time to wind down. I often thought that if the art thing didn’t work out I would like to be a cook. Food is such a great part of life that if we treat it only as fuel, we are missing out. Cooking, like art has core principals, and if you learn those principals, wonderful things can happen. My wife Debbie is a Kindergarten Teacher, so she comes home wiped out and in need to talk with an adult and I need to talk to anybody but the dogs. We have created a home we both really love and it is a place of sanctuary. Our neighbors and friends come over for Potluck dinners once a week. Living in Florida has allowed us to live outside year round and working for myself was a great way to work at another passion, my back yard. During a couple of good illustration years I starting putting patios, Tiki bar, fountains and an outdoor fireplace. Building the fireplace was an extension of my creative energy. It also became a big meeting place for family and friends. I think these elements family, friends, cooking and building things have made me a better artist. The balance act artists have to juggle in order to survive is different with all of us, but I think we all have to be aware of not just what’s in our studio but what surrounds us.

As artist’s, we are sensitive to our environment and usually shows itself in our paintings. Some move to locals that inspire them and start creating the best art of their lives. For many of us moving is not feasible, but we can make our studio and home a place that inspires.  My wife understands that her five year old students, who are starting school for the first time, need to feel  safe and happy in order to learn. If our environment is one that inspires and makes us happy it will show in the art we produce. Collectors buy art that makes their lives better and are in essence buying a piece of who we are. I don’t want to sugar coat our careers as artists because it is very difficult, but I am reminded of a school talk I did years ago and at the end of my show a little boy asked me” so you get to stay home and color all day”? Yes, yes I do.

Preparing for a Solo Show

After many months preparing for my Solo Exhibit at The Hughes Gallery in Boca Grande Fl., it is now finally hung.

My opening will Monday Febuary 18th from 5-7pm, with a meet and great on Thursday Febuary 21st from 10am-4pm.

I feel this is my best work yet and hope the collectors feel that way too! Most of my paintings have figures in them that create a narrative sense, scale, and focal point to the work.

What interests me is how light plays upon a subject and the mood it evokes. This moment changes all day long and finding the right moment

when ordinary things become extraordinary. We see this beauty in everyday life.Small events and rituals that could have taken place a 100 years ago or just yesterday. My life is to chronicle these events that move me with paint and canvas. All this would not be possible without  collectors purchasing my paintings, taking it home, and appreciating it. I'm a very lucky guy.

Happy Trails

This is my first post since June, but hopefully I will be a little more on top of this in the future. My summer was very busy with  a paint out and 2 workshops in Cashiers, NC. When traveling to the mountains I try to break up the 10 hr trip with a stop in St. Simons Ga. to visit The Anderson Gallery that I have been with since April. I can drop new work, visit friends and be on 95 north the next morning for Cashiers.

I have taken 3 different routes and I think the best one was from Yahoo Maps..the worst..my GPS. When you get close to the mountains there are these cool little towns in SC.The foothills offer the best landscape views and the beauty never  ceases to amaze me. The adventure to travel on an unfamilair rd. and find something new around the bend is one of the great highlights of being an artist. It's a great feeling to switch back up the mountain roads and get to some cooler air. It always makes me forget the long drive out of Florida and of course back.

Happy trails tilll next time.

Plein Air Events

Captain Justin

I will be hitting the road again Tuesday April 17th for The first St. Simons, Ga. Plein Air Event. St. Simons is suppose to be a great place to paint, so I will be looking forward to setting up my easel in a new local. The show will be hosted by the Glynn Art Association. On my way back to Florida I will be participating in The Winter Park Paint Out.Again a new event for me and new adventure.

I'll be back in town the 29th and hit the road on May 3rd for The Forgotten Coast paint Out. These three events will get me back in touch with painting from life, after months in the studio. It's a great balance and helps me improve my craft. I love the adventure of looking for the light and coming upon a scene that calls to be recorded in paint and canvas. The journey of observation is never ending and one of the most wonderful things about being an artist.

Cheers, Bill
